Sheriff Reports Active Shooter in Aberdeen

The Harford County Sheriff's Office has confirmed an active shooter situation this morning in Aberdeen. I am praying for the victims and their families. These shootings have become too familiar in our community. It has been less than a year since the deadly shooting at a business in Edgewood, and two years since Senior Deputy Dailey and Deputy First Class Logsdon were killed at an Abingdon eatery.

Thank God for the men and women in law enforcement who work around the clock for our safety. These first responders put their lives on the line to protect us time and time again.

Days like this remind me how critical it is to support our police officers, firemen, EMTs, and all our first responders. The risks they face for us demand nothing less. Working together, we can ensure first responders have the resources they need to fight crime, violence, and addiction. I ask you to stand with me. I BACK THE BLUE!

Education, Choices and Our Children

I have had several people ask me recently why I homeschool and do not have my children in Harford County Public Schools, especially since I am running for a county office. I had one person ask me if I hate the public school system. Of course, I do not. Having a vibrant and thriving educational system is vital for the country, state, and county and I fully support the school system and its teachers. Teachers and the entire school system require support from all levels of government to ensure our children are receiving the best possible education.

My oldest two children graduated from the Harford County Public School System, one from the Science and Math Academy and the other from the International Baccalaureate Program. For various reasons, my other children struggled within the school system. After reviewing the options available, my husband and I decided homeschooling would be the best choice for our children and the family. It was at that point, I realized public school systems are not able to meet the educational needs of every single child. Parents know their children’s strengths and weaknesses and are the best people to determine their educational needs.

My personal experience taught me families need to have educational choices available to them. They should be able to choose from among the options the one which will best meet the needs of their children and family. Homeschooling has provided us the flexibility to design individualized programs to meet the needs of each of our children and they are thriving.

Just like public education needs to be supported by the various levels of government, parental choice in education also needs to be supported.

Primary Victory!

I want to thank everyone who helped me to win my primary race for the Harford County Council District A council seat. I could not have done without the support of many individuals. My family supported and encouraged me throughout the entire primary season. My campaign staff kept me focused. My volunteers helped to spread the vision. Most important to the victory are the voters of Southern Harford County who heard my message and responded.

There is plenty of work to do, but I am ready to meet the challenges ahead. I look forward to speaking with many more of you in the months to come. I have a vision of a thriving and prosperous community, and I want to be Southern Harford's Voice to ensure we are heard in Bel Air.

Thoughts Today

I was driving my son Douglas around this morning. He will begin working his first full time job next week and I couldn’t be prouder of him. Today he had to stop by his new employer to drop off paperwork, then head the medical facility for a pre-employment physical and a drug test, given the state of the world today. The last stop was Wal-Mart for a pair of steel toed boots. Just a fun morning with mom and son as he was marking a life milestone.

We were driving up 24 and were passed by three fast moving Deputies. They were followed almost immediately by three more cars and then another ten cars or so heading in from the other direction: Bel Air, Havre de Grace, Maryland State Police, and more Deputies. I turned to Douglas and said, something is seriously wrong. I slipped back in time to February 2016 when Harford County lost our Deputies Dailey and Logsdon. I remember the large number vehicles passing by the building, the 15 minutes of unending sirens. Today the air had that same type of feeling. I hadn’t heard yet what was happening, but I just “knew” it was bad. Even while we were rushing for to get his shopping done, we were hearing sirens through the walls of the store.

When I hear of these types of situations, I am in awe of our Law Enforcement, Fire, and EMS providers. They rush into situations to help without knowing what they will find, acting on training and instinct with little regard for personal safety because they care.

As I write this the shooter remains on the loose, and has just shot another person in Delaware. He is a man with nothing to lose, and that makes him dangerous. I urge everyone to stay safe, especially the law enforcement personnel who will rush in to stop him from harming anyone.

My thoughts and prayers are with everyone who has been affected and is being affected right now.

Edgewood Redevelopment Plan Presentation

On Wednesday, October 18, 2017, the Harford County Office of Economic Development with be presenting the Edgewood Redevelopment Plan. The presentation will be held at the Edgewood High School from 6 pm to 8 pm. This redevelopment plan resulted from the Edgewood Small Area Study, which was conducted over the past few months.

I would like to see a significant citizen turnout at the meeting to hear what the county envisions for the Edgewood Community. I want the community to learn about this plan and know what the small area study has said about the area and know how we can improve Edgewood for all of our citizens.

I will not let this plan just sit on the shelf and be forgotten as previous plans have. I intend to hold Harford County Government accountable to ensure sure the proposed redevelopment steps are implemented and having an informed community is the first part in making sure it happens. Please join me at the presentation!

Donna Blasdell Announces Candidacy for Harford County Council District A Seat

Donna Blasdell declared her candidacy for the office of Harford County Council member for District A today at a campaign kickoff event in Edgewood.

“I stand for a government which delivers a fair share of county resources, for a revitalized local economy, for safer streets, and for strong schools and vocational programs.” Blasdell said.

Speaking to the audience at Flying Point Park, Donna stated she is committed to ensuring the county government works for all its constituents, including those in the southern parts of the county who have historically been underrepresented in Bel Air.

“I am running to be Southern Harford's Voice!”, she said.

Donna’s platform centers around several key local issues. At the top of her list is responsive, transparent local government.

“For too long the County Government has appeared to operate under a cloak of secrecy, especially for those of us in the Southern Harford area”, she said. “We see our tax dollars not being spent in the our area, for our needs, yet watch as other areas of the county receive the very things denied to us, without an explanation.”

She is also committed to bringing residents and businesses back to the Route 40 corridor. Donna plans on using the Edgewood Area Small Area Study which is currently underway, as a springboard to economic revitalization in Southern Harford.

Donna also wants ensure local law enforcement and first responders have the tools they need to keep our community safe and drug-free. She will work with the Sheriff and the local volunteer fire companies to make sure they are prepare to combat crime and reduce our current heroin epidemic.

Donna wants to ensure the schools have needed resources available from the county. She plans to meet with local businesses to determine what they need in a local workforce and work to meet those needs. She is also working to bring more apprenticeships and on-the-job training to the area Southern Harford.

Donna plans to visit neighborhoods in Joppa and Edgewood this month to meet with residents. She will be at the Sunrise Condominium community on Saturday, September 16th at 10:00 AM. She is inviting all her friends and volunteers to come out too.

“It is my desire for Southern Harford to become the shining star of Harford County. To accomplish this, I will need your support to be Southern Harford’s Voice!”
